Date: December 4, 2006

Thanks to the microfibre revolution, microfibre hand mitts suck up grime and shampoo like never before, and they are much easier to use than sponges when keeping your car clean this winter.

Since the modern microscopic fibres penetrate so deep into the bodywork, it is easy to remove those hard-to-shift marks and they require very little pressure. They also absorb more water than their natural fibre predecessors, which still require frequent dips into the bucket.

Thanks to the makers of this wonderful invention, they are now less likely to slip off your hand thanks to improved designs.

For more news on Car Wash Products visit http://www.waxyourauto.com

Read The Small Print And Avoid Extra Costs At The End Of Your Lease

by Gregg Hall

These days it seems every where you turn car dealers are trying to sell you on leasing a car instead of buying. While leasing may be good for some, for the majority of people it is not. Here are a few things to watch out for when negotiating a lease, and yes just like a purchase they are negotiable.

When you lease a car you need to pay particular attention to the terminology for what you are responsible for at the end of the lease. Sometimes they charge a vehicle disposition fee which I have seen as high as $500! They may charge you for excessive mileage, excessive wear on tires, etc. Let’s take a closer look at these things.

First off, we have the disposition fee which is the fee charged by the leasing company or bank if you decide to turn the vehicle in instead of buying it at the end of the lease term. The fee is usually described as necessary to cover expenses that the company will incur to sell the vehicle such as getting it ready to sell, auction expenses, and commissions. Be sure that the fee is stated clearly and remember that you can negotiate.

One of the biggies that nails a lot of people who lease is the excess mileage charge. Nearly all leases charge these penalties; as a matter of fact I have never seen one that didn’t. These charges can add up quickly with some companies charging as much as 30 cents per mile for every mile over the mileage allowed in the contract which is typically only 10,000 to 12,000.

I don’t know about you but I drive more than that and so do most people. The average is around 15,000 miles a year. This can be negotiated into the lease so be sure that you get extra miles upfront, it’s a whole lot cheaper that what you will pay on the backend.

Another way that you get stuck is by vague “excess wear and tear” clauses. You need to make sure it is spelled out in the contract what the definition of excessive wear and tear is. If there is no description telling you what the standards are that they go by then it will be up to the leasing company and the person inspecting the car when you turn it in and you will left holding the bag. If you have minor damage you are better off having it repaired yourself than turning it in and letting the lease company handle it. They will always charge more than what you can get it done for.

My suggestion as a former automobile sales manager is that if you are stuck on leasing that you make sure you stay under the mileage allowed, keep maintenance records, repair any damage, and get the vehicle looked over and appraised before turning it end at the end of the lease. If you have all of your records in this way you are far less likely to be hassled.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author and internet marketing consultant living in Navarre Florida.
Did You Know That Porsche Once Built Airplanes And Tanks?

by Gregg Hall

Okay, not really but the founder of Porsche, Ferdinand Porsche, was an important developer in the engineering of airplanes and race cars plus in tank building for the Wehrmacht.

Many people do not realize what a prolific inventor this man was, he had over one thousand patents issued! Early in his automotive engineering career Ferdinand was chief engineer for none other than Mercedes Benz, after being dismissed for disagreeing with their engineering methods he started his own engineering firm in Stuttgart where he was responsible for the design of the Volkswagen Beetle that be came so popular.

After the second world war, Porsche began building cars with Ferry Porsche, his son and they called their first car the Porsche 356. The car was a small sports car very similar in design to the VW with the same four cylinder rear mounted engine.

It was a far cry from the Porsche we know today with only 40 horsepower and a maximum speed of only 87 miles per hour. They first designed the 356 to be a convertible but later it was redesigned as a coupe by Erwin Komenda, a master designer for Porsche who had been the head of that department since the days when they developed the Beetle. With its new innovative fastback design, the 356 coupe became the sports car poster child.

The Porsche tradition of signature sports cars continued to grow and with the introduction of the 911 developed by Butzi Porsche, Ferdinand’s grandson, and Komenda the popularity of the Porsche nameplate exploded! With the easily distinguishable sloped nose and the big frog eye headlamps, the 911 stood apart from the crowd and screamed its name to everyone.

This new Porsche became the cornerstone that Porsche wanted to display. Attempts to move away from the roots by building cars like the 924 and 928 almost ruined the company and were nowhere near as popular as it had been thought they would be.

After narrowly escaping financial disaster in that partnership with VW on the 924 and 928, the company came to the realization that what some of the engineers had thought of as being limiting was not that at all but was actually a niche market unto itself with the timeless features of the Porsche 911 design.

Now the company went to work with a design team that focused solely on improving the 911 and by 1999 the company released the all new Boxster, re-establishing the popularity of the sports car company.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author and internet marketing consultant living in Navarre Florida.
And In The Beginning There Was Porsche

by Gregg Hall

Well, not exactly. Porsche isn’t one of the oldest automakers in the world but they have certainly become on of the most prestigious and they have been for quite some time. So when did the company begin?

Some would say that the story begins when Max Hoffman started importing the Porsche to the United States, of course that would be an American point of view. I say the story of Porsche begins with the birth of its founder, Ferdinand Porsche who was born to a tinsmith in the village of Haffersdorf, Germany in 1875.

Ferdinand showed his genius at an early age, wiring his family’s home for electricity at the age of eighteen. He hadn’t yet displayed the incredibly disciplined engineering skills that he would eventually found a company on. Sometimes you will see the term “Doctor” added to his name, although his only formal education in technical engineering was as a part time student in Vienna, Austria.

Seven years later, at 25, he had begun designing automobiles with his first design accepted by a company in Vienna by the name of Lohner & Co. For the next two decades Ferdinand was an engineer with all of the big players of the day in the German automotive industry and was responsible for designing at least a dozen of the most important vehicles in automotive history, at least from a technical standpoint.

While working for the renowned Mercedes Benz, he was a developer of the most popular Mercedes models in history, the SSK. His temperamental attitude got him in trouble with the higher ups in Mercedes and he was released for not agreeing with their philosophies on engineering. He went out on his own and began a company he called Porsche A.G., which was engineering and consulting firm based in Stuttgart. One of his key employees was his young son, Ferry who was highly interested in racing cars and sports.

While working for the forerunner of Audi, then known as Auto Union, they developed the Front, which was the first front wheel drive car. Then they dazzled the company and the rest of the automotive world with their mid-engine Grand Prix racers and super charged V-12 and V-16 motors that won the majority of racing titles in Europe along with Mercedes for almost ten years.

Many people don’t realize that is was Ferdinand Porsche who engineered the design that would become the VW Beetle. He had created prototypes for NSU and Zundapp but became dissatisfied with their not moving on to build the designs so he allowed the German government to buy the plans. Afterwards, he directed the building of a factory to build the vehicle he called the Type 60, which became the Beetle.

It was after WWII that Porsche began making vehicles that carried his nameplate and made him a household name all over the world.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author and internet marketing consultant living in Navarre Florida.
The Battle Rages On Between Porsche And Ferrari

by Gregg Hall

The two European automakers, Porsche of Germany and Ferrari of Italy, have a lot of similarities even though the two compete with each other head to head for a niche market of the automotive industry. Both companies have a patriarchal founder, companies honed their skills in racing, are over five decades old, and both have a commitment to the integrity of their styling. If you question whether the two are the dominant force in performance autos just take a street survey and you will find that even a novice who knows nothing about cars knows these names.

For the purposes of this comparison we have chosen to feature the iconoclastic 911 Carrera from Porsche and the gorgeous Ferrari F430 because the two are representative of their respective company’s long standing tradition of marrying style and performance while offering some practicality but in the end are true sports cars though and through.

Both of these cars have the basic requirements of the modern sports car which are the ability to be started easily, handles well in town, takes winding country roads well and has race car performance coupled with safety.

When comparing standing start times the Ferrari is a slight bit faster edging out the Porsche by .8 seconds with a four second time in the zero to 100km/h test which is needless to say lightning fast. With speeds like these it is also imperative that the two speedsters be able to stop equally efficiently and the two do so offering optional cutting edge ceramic braking systems.

Porsche definitely wins in the fuel economy comparison getting nearly twice the mileage that the F430 gets. Both cars transfer the power of their engines through state of the art six speed transmissions.

The interiors of both vehicles offer a great deal of comfort that belies the small space and doesn’t leave the driver feeling cramped or closed in. The overall appearance in style goes to the Porsche hands down though as masters of high quality finish work.

When having to decide between the two, assuming you have the money to do so, the biggest difference is appearance with the Ferrari having the head turning looks but overall we have to give the fight to Porsche as the more well rounded of the two and the one that is less costly to maintain. It was fun to compare them however and maybe you should make a comparison of your own.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author and internet marketing consultant living in Navarre Florida.
The Engineering Side Of The Porsche 911 With The 997 Body Shell

by Gregg Hall

It’s always a treat when the German automaker, Porsche releases a new 911 model just from an engineering standpoint; I am constantly amazed how after over four decades of production of this iconic speedster Porsche always seems able to deliver something that we haven’t seen before. It is almost like they are the NASA of the automotive world, constantly introducing true innovations to the automotive industry.

The new bodyshell for the 911 is dubbed the 997 and gives us the sexy smooth styling of the 996 body series but is blended with the retro chic look of the earlier 911. The front of the body features rounded lights and independent parking and fog lights. This modification coupled with the wider hip adjustment brings to mind the earlier and now extinct air cooled 911 body which was called the 993. The new look also introduces a new door handle style, wing mirrors, and the rear wings are integrated into the bumper.

The 997 bodyshell while resembling the 996 is almost 40mm wider and makes for a more forceful looking appearance without dramatically altering the styling of the car. Another key issue with the German car maker is to always try to reduce the drag in order to make the vehicle cut through air with the least friction possible and they have done it again with the 997 bodyshell. The drag co-efficient has been reduced from .34 in the 993 to .28 now in the new 997. This is one of the engineering marvels that is just mind blowing to me. How can they take a car that already has one of the lowest drag co-efficients and make it even lower?

The advances in the structural engineering and suspension have created a Porsche that handles better than ever with improved rigidity in the torsion bars and nearly forty percent more flexural strength.
Improving crash safety was a key desire for the new 911, hence two new airbags are now located in the side of each front seat back rest which are made to protect the thorax area of the body. This new addition along with the two front and two side airbags brings the tall up to six.

The new stronger bodyshell also employs more super high strength steel than ever before which makes it over 100 lbs heavier than the 996 before it, but the reason is to meet the newer crash safety standards. Despite the additional weight, the advances in aerodynamics help it to match the performance of the 996 themed 911.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author and internet marketing consultant living in Navarre Florida.
